Gender Mismatch

These topics describe the Gender Mismatch alert.

Purpose

To identify concepts within a radiology procedure report that do not align with the patient sex given in the report header/demographics.

Details

  • The natural language processing (NLP) identifies male and female concepts in the procedure report and compares them with the value (M or F) in the administrativeGender field (part of the report metadata that are contained in the CDA document).

  • Reports that include documentation of the patient as transgender, or undergoing or having had gender reassignment procedure(s), are excluded from this alert.

  • For these Assist alerts to fire, customer exam descriptions must include the following:

    • Modality and/or number of views

    • Laterality

    • Body part

For example: US ABDOMEN COMPLETE or XR ABDOMEN 3 VIEWS

Modalities, exams, and sections

The NLP reasons over specific modalities, exams, and/or report sections for each individual alert, and for some alerts, certain types are deliberately excluded in order to prevent false positive alerts. A summary of the inclusions and exclusions for the gender mismatch alert are provided below.

3. Comparison

*If an original report is signed with an unresolved gender mismatch alert and an addendum is create from that report, a gender mismatch will not appear when an addendum is created, UNLESS a new gender mismatch is in the newly created addendum or the original report is copied into the addendum. Due to the number of false positive alerts that result from addenda, the Addendum section was removed from the NLP reasoning for the gender mismatch alert.
